Mulberry Nigra Chelsea Mulberry Nigra Chelsea

This plant was named 'Chelsea' by the late Robert garner of East Malling. Cuttings from the famous tree in the Chelsea Physic Garden, planted by King James II were rescued when the tree was destroyed early in the 1939-45 war. A large mulberry tree with classic drooping branches and dark red to black fruits of fine flavour, excellent for eating fresh, in pies, in preserves and mulberry gin or wine.picking is easier if you use a sheet and shake the tree, saves the juice from staining hands and clothes. Our plants, grown from cuttings usually fruit within 3 years or so of planting. They benefit from water in dry spells during summer, in fact for young trees it is essential when establishing the tree, and for when the fruit is colouring.
