BRUGMANSIA - (Back)

Brugmansia or Datura as they were called, are vigorous shrubs that will make 6ft (2m) in one year easily. Brugmansia are very hungry, thirsty plants and can be fed almost continuously, keep them in a pot 12-18 “ (45cm) on the Terrace during summer and place in a frost free spot for the winter, even a spare room will do.

Brugmansia will not need pruning unless they get out of control and this can be detrimental to flowering as they will only flower after the stem has forked of its own accord , not before. Note that Brugmansia are classified ‘harmful if eaten’ it is mainly the seed pods that are worst and they will rarely set seed in the UK.

It is said that you must not sleep under a Brugmansia or tether your Donkey to one as the scent is too intoxicating. Brugmansia or ‘Angels Trumpets’ are very highly scented after 5-6pm. Many will have 50-100 flower buds on when established.

Red spider can be a problem but regular hosing down will help as they do not like getting wet!
