MULBERRIES - (Back)
Mulberries ( Morus nigra) are majestic long ,lived trees. The Black mulberry, grown for its fruit, is the most impressive gnarled looking tree when only around 25 yrs old, with branches drooping to the ground and huge heart shaped leaves. This is the Mulberry tree to grow if you are wanting mulberries to eat or to make Mulberry jelly or even mulberry Gin, (recipes available ! )
Another type of Mulberry is the Morus alba or ‘White Mulberry’ , prized for its leaves to feed silk worms with. It will bear fruit but they can be a little tart. The ‘weeping white mulberry’ (morus alba pendula) though is a great ornamental tree, forming a tall column of light green foliage that curtains to the ground ,quite slow growing and very attractive.
A recent addition to our collection and available later this year in limited numbers is the Morus nigra ‘Illinois Everbearing’ a much more vigorous cultivar with bigger leaves and tasty fruit.
Mulberries will need careful planting , usually in spring is best but autumn planting is ok if you mulch the Mulberry tree well to prevent damage from severe weather.
During the first season or two it is essential to give the Mulberry tree sufficient water and feed to ensure good growth in the early years, failure to do this will result in a tree that will not grow or establish properly ,and most likely to suffer from canker
