Damsons and Bullaces

Damsons (Oval fruit) & Bullaces (Round fruit)

Damsons are renowned for making Damson Gin and Damson Cheese. They have a richly astringent flavour. In the past they were used for making a dye for uniforms and clothes.

The word 'Damson' comes from the medieval 'damascene' meaning the Plum of Damascus.

Both can be planted in hedges but need careful attention to ensure they become established successfully. For this purpose St Julian A is a suitable rootstock. Planting is the same as for plums, paying attention to the soil drainage and feeding in the early years.

Once established they need very little work, except for harvesting the fruit!
