The Black Mulberry
Large mulberry tree with dark red fruits of fine flavour, excellent for eating fresh, in pies, in preserves and mulberry gin or wine. Our plants, grown from cuttings, usually fruit within 3 years or so of planting. They benefit from water in dry spells, especially when the fruit is colouring. Young trees will need water in abundance to prevent die-back in hot summers.
The plants are 3 -4 ft (1m) tall and are currently being repotted so will arrive in 7.5 ltr pots with fresh compost.
The plant was named 'Chelsea' by the late Robert Garner of East Malling fruit research station. He rescued the tree, reputedly planted by King James in the Chelsea Physic Garden, which was badly damaged by bombs in the war.
